About our SHRUBS

Sauvie Shrubs ingredients are lovingly grown and sourced on Sauvie Island: the largest farming community within Multnomah county. The base of our Drinking Vinegar is an organic, raw, unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother (similar to a kombucha scoby). Some drinking vinegars on the market are balsamic or cane vinegar-based, meaning you are missing the health benefits that come only with using ACV: It’s high in acetic acid, antioxidants, good gut bacteria, and probiotics.

Sauvie Shrubs uses organic raw cane sugar or organic raw honey for minimal sweetening, with only one to three grams of sugar per serving compared to almost 8-12 grams per serving with many Kombuchas or other drink mixers. Staying low on sugar allows our Shrubs to maintain the fruit-forward flavors you’ll enjoy paired with a variety of herbs and spices, the perfect balance of tart, tangy and just a touch sweet.

Once the fruit, herbs, spices, and organic raw sugar or honey are added, the mix goes through a second ferment, making Sauvie Shrubs a twice fermented Shrub. The second fermentation maintains those extra probiotics that make Shrubs a powerful health tonic. Sold as concentrates, Sauvie Shrubs offer more value and options for use than pre-mixed Shrub Soda.

We are committed to working towards a more sustainable and greener planet. All of our products are ZERO WASTE and nothing is thrown out in the process. We use the leftover mash from the Shrubs and Fire Ciders to then create more delicious and unique products such as Shrub Jam and Fire Cider Seasoning Salt. We also have a partnership with Portland Refill Center who takes our empty bottles: removes labels, cleans, sterilizes, and then returns them to us to reuse! Customers enjoy being part of our recycling program and receive a discount for returning their bottles.

Recently there has been a Shrub resurgence, and you will see them in bars and cafes in craft cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks alike. With the recent birth of the “sober curious” movement, many people deciding to make the choice to not drink, and the growth and visibility of zero proof mixers and elixirs, the demand for delicious and healthy non-alcoholic drink options have positioned our zero proof Shrubs as the perfect cocktail alternative (and still delicious in conventional cocktails as well). Just adding one to two tablespoons to sparkling water makes an excellent spritzer. Cheers to your health! 

Shrubs are super versatile and have many uses beyond the mixing glass. Combined with olive oil they form the base of salad dressing or marinade for meat and vegetables. A few generous dashes will add complexity to bone broth, soup, or stews. They are a great addition to herbal teas, smoothies, or drizzled over ice cream, sorbet, or yogurt. Because vinegar and sugar are natural preservatives, Shrubs last. And because it's all preserved, there's no need to keep them refrigerated after opening.

Sauvie Shrubs has grown organically, from a personal project into a blossoming local enterprise. Every step of the way, we’ve not only sought inspiration from the Island, but we’ve actively pursued opportunities to give something back to the land that continually inspires us. Sauvie Shrubs are a product that we not only believe in but comes from the very land we love and live on.
